Rikubetsu is a town located in Ashoro District, Tokachi Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. It is called the coldest machi in Japan, on the chillest day which can be recorded as -30 degree celsius. Due to this unpleasant temperature, lots of young people have moved to cities for better career track. However, Fuyuko Tanaka who was born in fukuoka, makes an alterative choice that seldom people make, by staying in this full of snow, super inconvenient town for her snow crystal artwork.
Everything has its own cause. The cause for the Fukuoka girl coming this almost no people town is she was impressed with the sky view of the town when visiting the festival a few years ago. After that, she decides to stay in Rikubetsu for a period of time, to experience more from the town.
⇓⇓⇓Unluckily, her phone wasn’t working anymore due to the severe cold weather.
In 1955, there were around 9000 people living in this town, but in 2016 now only around 2500 people stayed here. In Hokkaido, only Sapporo is crowded with people, with more job opportunities, more schools and hospitals available that convenience people’s life.
“Inside is way warmer then Fukuoka’s in winter time, but outside in Hokkaido, of course, is chillingly cold.” She said
Fuyuko also has another role, as an artist, collecting snow crystal. She said it was easier for her to remember the different patterns of snow crystal if she saw them in real life.
Have you been to Hokkaido ? Do you want to live there for a long period of time ?
